Looking for things to do with kids in Northamptonshire? Whether you live locally or are visiting the area, this guide shares our top five child-friendly places for a fun family day out.
From outdoor adventures to cultural gems, these spots have been tested by our own children and come parent-approved. Expect open spaces, play areas, interactive experiences and lots of opportunities to make memories together.
1. Foxton Locks
Foxton Locks is one of those places that feels like a mini adventure without straying too far from home. The flight of ten canal locks is fascinating for kids to watch, and the surrounding area is perfect for a gentle walk, a scooter ride or a picnic by the water. There are boats passing through regularly, and our children love spotting the different types. There is also a small museum and a couple of cafes for a treat afterwards.

Parenting Tip: Make sure you go visit the ice cream shop at the top of the canal. Trust us you will keep going back just for this.
2. Royal & Derngate Theatre

Royal & Derngate in Northampton holds a special place for our family. We’ve visited many times with our children, especially around Christmas to watch their brilliant pantomimes and festive productions. It’s also a favourite for using gift vouchers from grandparents, which makes the experience even more memorable. The theatre offers a great mix of family shows throughout the year, including interactive performances and children’s theatre. It’s welcoming, well-organised, and there are lots of nearby places to grab a bite before or after the show.
Parenting Tip: Look out for “relaxed performances” if your child is sensitive to noise or needs a more flexible environment.
3. Wicksteed Park
Wicksteed Park in Kettering is one of our family favourites. With over 30 rides and attractions, plus a huge playground and beautiful parkland, there’s something for every age. Our children especially love the train ride around the lake and the giant slides, and we often find ourselves there for a whole day. At Christmas, the park transforms with festive lights, a magical train ride, visits with Santa and even real reindeer you can feed. It’s a tradition our kids look forward to every year. In the summer, the food markets are a lovely addition, with plenty of great options for snacks and meals while enjoying the outdoor space.
You only pay for the rides you use, and there is free access to the park and play areas, which makes it flexible for different budgets.

Parenting Tip: Pack swimwear and towels in summer. The splash zone is a big hit and often unexpected if you are visiting for the first time.
4. Stanwick Lakes
Stanwick Lakes is one of our favourite outdoor spots to spend the whole day. The walking and cycling routes are buggy-friendly and easy to follow, with sculptures and bird hides along the way to keep little ones interested. The adventure playground is a real highlight with water pumps, climbing structures and zip wires, our children always find something new to explore. We also love how family-friendly the space is, with plenty of picnic tables, a designated BBQ area, and wide open spaces perfect for a blanket and a football. It’s the kind of place you can visit time and again and always discover something different. There is a visitor centre and café to warm up in winter or grab an ice cream in summer.

Parenting Tip: Bring a change of clothes for younger children. The play area involves water and sand, which is half the fun.
5. Abington Park & Museum

Abington Park is one of our go-to places when we want a relaxed day close to home. The open green spaces are perfect for a picnic, and there’s plenty for the children to explore. From the lakes and the small aviary to the well-equipped playground. We often combine it with a quick visit to the museum, which may be small, but it’s full of interesting local history. It’s also completely free, and during school holidays there are often family events and themed trails that the kids really enjoy. It’s simple, easy and always a hit when we need a no-fuss outing.
Parenting Tip: Take a football or a picnic blanket. It is a great place to relax while the kids explore.
